Sparking New Opportunities

We had the opportunity to revisit the JA JobSpark event this past month. This unique event gave over 13,000 eighth grade students the opportunity to learn about and explore careers across various fields. Our experience was structured like an early education classroom similar to those within our centers. Students interested in early learning had the opportunity to explore the decision-making process of setting up learning stations for young children as they were guided by our own teachers and a classroom readiness checklist. A special thanks to Marienid Gonzalez-Melendez, Natalie Brake, Karly Mote, Andi Atherine, Sarah Hopkins, Norma Callahan, Marlo Allen, Courtney Veintimilla and Rachel Whaley for making the experience possible for these students.

Tea Time

Last week we hosted a gathering to honor the Day Nursery Auxiliary and commemorate the legacy of past members. Auxiliary members past and present were celebrated for their many contributions of advocacy, philanthropy and volunteerism. Some highlights of the morning included:

  • Mrs. Sally Coombs, lead teacher for the toddler 3 class at the Lilly center, was celebrated for her 31 years of educating DEL children. Mrs. Coombs is our longest tenured teacher.
  • Mona Stephens and Susan Oxfurth were acknowledged for their exceptional volunteerism. Together, they volunteered 171 hours from May 2022-Sept. 2023. Both are volunteers at the Lilly center.
  • Memorial donations in honor of Mary Catherine Lotti made enhancements possible to the Lilly Family Center’s large motor room. Mary Catherine was a Lilly center volunteer.
  • The late Rosie Tanner and her husband, Gene, were acknowledged for the remarkable legacy they have created, most notably in the form of our annual Tanner Teacher of the Year award and our DEL Professional Development Day.

We are immensely fortunate to have the support of a committed group of volunteers so devoted — for more than a century — to the work we do each day and the children we serve. We can’t imagine better friends!

Zero to Three

Kelsey Webb, Senior Manager, Network Initiatives at Early Learning Indiana and Chances And Services for Youth Family Engagement Specialist, Amy Marine, presented at the Zero to Three Conference on Sept. 20 in Minneapolis.

Zero to Three's LEARN Conference is the go-to event for professionals from across the early childhood field seeking to advance their knowledge and practice. Amy and Kelsey presented to 300 attendees on the Child Care Resource & Referral Network's two-generational approach to assisting families in finding high-quality care and connecting those families with additional child- and adult-serving resources. You can check out the Family Resource Navigator on Brighter Futures Indiana to see low- and no-cost services available to families across the state by an easy zip code search.

Purdue Benefits Fair

This past week, Director of Business Development, Andi Atherine, and Purdue ECEC Operations Manager, Amanda Whiteley, attended the Purdue Benefits Fair. The fair was held on Purdue's campus and was the first in-person fair since before the pandemic. Day Early Learning's booth served to promote the two centers in West Lafayette.

Purdue Benefits Fair (better quality)

We spoke to approximately 100 staff, students and community members to market preschool, pre-K and before- and after-school care seats.
